For the past couple years the SCA has led hike/bike trail construction efforts at Rouge Park on Detroit’s west side.

The Student Conservation Association (SCA), America’s #1 conservation service organization seeks a Program Coordinator for our Community Conservation Program in Detroit, MI.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize and deliver conservation-based youth employment program in Detroit, MI in collaboration with community partner organization.
  • Recruit, hire and train seasonal crew leaders to lead youth in program.
  • Work with other SCA staff to create and facilitate crew leader trainings focused on youth development, outdoor leadership, and conservation work skills.
  • Assist program partner with youth recruitment, try-out, and hiring process.
  • Develop sustainable conservation projects with program partners in neighborhoods, city/regional parks, and public lands.
  • Develop educational opportunities, primarily revolving around the SCA Green Job Readiness Curriculum, focused on work readiness competencies, environmental education, and green career pathway exploration.
  • Ensure that programming is developed and implemented to SCA program standards.
  • Handle administration, reporting and evaluation of all SCA Detroit program activities.
  • Represent SCA Detroit in partnership development, visibility efforts, and maintain a positive community reputation.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in conservation, education, youth development, or a related field.
  • 2+ years experience in at least 2 of the following fields: education, outdoor recreation, non-profit management, community organizing, conservation or youth development
  • 2+ years program management experience including staff hiring, field operations and safety, and environmental education.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and implement conservation, community, or youth development programs with youth and young adults in the Detroit community.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Valid driver’s license and MVR that meets SCA standards
  • Ability to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards
  • Working knowledge of MSOffice
  • Community First Aid (including CPR) certification from the Red Cross, American Heart Association, or other approved medical training.
