Bicycles and cars try to learn to share the road

As bicycle lovers across Michigan promote cycling in the face of increasing gasoline prices, the movement in metro Detroit took a hit this month when a bus and cyclist collided, killing the cyclist.

The crash occurred the morning of July 7 on Gratiot in Detroit and killed 50-year-old Vincent Trahan of Detroit. It has spurred discussion among bike riders and raised the question: How safe are cyclists on Michigan roads?

Ped Safety guide released

“The Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center (PBIC) has released a framework for state and local agencies to develop and implement pedestrian safety action plans. The guide is designed to help agencies enhance their existing pedestrian safety programs and activities, including identifying safety problems, analyzing information, and selecting optimal solutions. The guide also contains information on how to involve stakeholders, potential sources of funding for implementing projects, and how to evaluate projects.”

Todd Scott of Royal Oak is on the lookout for all who share the road: “Tom: I enjoyed reading your list of resolutions and would like to suggest additional resolutions for the safety of pedestrians and cyclists, including: Yielding to pedestrians in crosswalks; not obstructing sidewalks when parking my vehicle; and exercising due care to avoid colliding with any pedestrian or cyclist on any roadway at all times.”
